Pages 189-194

https://doi.org/10.69513/jnfh.v3.i4.a1

Ahmed Ali Hassan

Abstract    This research examines the techniques employed in translating Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) pertaining to Eschatology in the Holy Qur’an. It identifies the challenges associated with these techniques and proposes solutions for translators. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of accurately conveying the intended meaning of the Qur’anic text and highlights instances of meaning loss when translating certain CSIs. Moreover, the research explains the rationale behind the decisions made during the adaptation of the text for the English language. An eclectic methodology is utilized to achieve the research objectives, combining various text-analysis and translation-oriented approaches. The study concludes that translators of eschatological terms are often subconsciously influenced by their own religious, social, and cultural contexts. It also observes that many translators tend to use general terms instead of lexemes that capture the connotative meanings of eschatological items.

Implied Linguistic Redundancy in Arabic-English Administrative Translation: An Analytical Study of Student Strategies

Pages 201-211

https://doi.org/10.69513/jnfh.v3.i4.a3

AbdullMalk Marwan Ali

Abstract This study investigates the challenges of translating implied linguistic redundancy in Arabic administrative documents into English, focusing on the strategies employed by undergraduate translation students. Through a qualitative analysis of 140 student-translated samples, the study identifies recurring patterns of literal translation, ineffective handling of procedural and courtesy-based expressions, and a limited application of functional rephrasing strategies. The findings reveal that most students resort to surface-level equivalence, often neglecting genre-specific norms and the pragmatic intent underlying redundant expressions. The study emphasizes the need for pedagogical reforms in translator training, particularly the integration of discursive awareness and genre-sensitive instruction into the curriculum. These results contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between linguistic form and institutional convention in translation. They also shed light on how future translators can navigate such challenges through informed, context-sensitive strategies.

L'Impact Émotionnel du Monologue Intérieur dans Frère d'Âme de David Diop

Karam Eskander Al-hadeethi

God is Silent, the Sea is Not: Moby-Dick and the Failure of Religious Consolation

Pages 225-230

https://doi.org/10.69513/jnfh.v3.i4.a6

Myasar Ammar Kamil

Abstract Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is a work that depicts in great detail the silence of God when faced with human suffering and the indifference of the universe. The authors of this article try to show how the book is a reflection of the loss of traditional religious comfort, where the silence of the deity is contrasted with the continuous sound of the sea - a power that is both beautiful and frightening. Captain Ahab’s rejection of God, Ishmael’s philosophical thoughts, and the crew’s tragedy are like Melville’s existential struggle with meaning, morality, and metaphysical order. The sea metaphorically becomes the character that speaks while God is silent and this situation represents the 19th-century world that has a faith crisis because of scientific progress and theological suspicion. Using close reading and theological and philosophical concepts that are mainly based on Calvinism, Romanticism, and proto-existentialism this work says that Moby-Dick is not a story about the divine justice, but it is rather a witness of the lack of religious certainty in the disorderly universe. Melville’s literary theology does not give a clear solution, it only offers a scary perception of a universe where the human being’s search for meaning is both glorious and fated. This paper rightfully regards Moby-Dick as a very important book in the literary history of spiritual disillusionment and metaphysical questioning

ِAhmed Taha Ahmed

Abstract The research deals with the artistic elements in the short story "The Endless Ascent Journey" by Imad al-Din Khalil. The research includes an introduction and four chapters. The introduction addresses the concept of the short story, as well as the writer's literary and scientific biography, followed by a summary of the story. Then, the first chapter explores the concept of dialogue, its functions, and types, both external and internal. As for the second chapter, it deals with time and place in the story, while the third chapter tackles the main event, clarifying the idea of the story and its meaning. As for the fourth chapter, it studies the character as a concept, its patterns and dimensions. The research concluded with several key findings, the most significant of which is that the true endless ascent journey lies in drawing closer to God Almighty and responding to the calls of faith, ultimately leading to Paradise. In addition, the story confirms that he is able to return to the truth, as it is better for him than persisting in falsehood. The internal dialogue prevailed in the story, revealing the character and the event. As for the place, it had a strong presence in the story, unlike the element of time. This may be attributed to the main character’s interest in the familiar place (Old Mosul), which he loved and made a safe haven for him to retreat to whenever life became difficult and crises intensified. It is worth noting that the story and the collection in which it came belong to Islamic literature.

The restriction by the adverbial sentence and its effect on determining the meaning of prohibition in the Holy Quran

Muna Fathal Ismail

Abstract     This research focuses on investigating the effect of the adverbial sentence, as a restriction, on the prohibition sentence in terms of its denotation and intended meaning, as mentioned in several passages of the Holy Quran. There are questions posed in this regard that the current research will answer, including: Will the current sentence restrict the prohibition denotation, or will it remain absolute? What is its impact on its meaning? Will the prohibition be confined to a specific domain or will it cover several domains? What is the relationship between that and the restriction? Will the current sentence be in the nominal or verbal form, or will it involve both of them, in addition to other questions? It is not surprising that the Holy Quran is a subject of extensive research. After all, it is the Book of Allah, exalted and unmatched, in which the characteristics of nobility, clarity, precision of structure, and richness of denotations and meanings are evident, and this has attracted scholars and researchers to delve into its depths to reveal its linguistic treasures. This study combined both inductive and analytical methods of research, tracing and examining instances in which the prohibition is confined and restricted by the adverbial sentence, and considered without the singular adverb, and then followed by analysis, which led to the desired results of the research. The research begins with an introduction that defines the terms in the research title. The study was divided into three sections: the first was dedicated to the restriction by the adverbial sentence in the field of legislation, the second to the restriction in the field of Quranic stories, and the third to the restriction in the field of transaction etiquette. These sections were followed by a table of Quranic verses related to the research, and the study concluded with the most prominent findings. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

Hanen Hassen Soleman

Abstract The research aims to identify the effect of the pentagram strategy on the achievement of fifth-grade middle school female students in the Arabic language subject and to develop their coordination thinking. To achieve the goal of the research, the researcher developed two main null hypotheses, which are as follows:
There is no statistically significant difference between the average grades of the female students in the experimental group who study using the pentagram strategy and those of the female students in the control group who study using the usual method for developing coordination thinking. The research sample was intentionally selected from the research community. It intentionally consisted of fifth-grade science students at Khadija al-Kubra Preparatory School for Girls in Mosul for the first semester of the academic year (2023-2024 AD). The sample consisted of 73 students, divided into two experimental and one control group. There were (37) students in the experimental group who studied according to the pentagram strategy and (36) students in the control group who studied traditionally. The researcher used the experimental method with equal groups and conducted the process of equivalence on the two research groups in some variables that included: (chronological age calculated in months, the grade of the Arabic language subject for the previous year, the general average of the female students for the previous academic year, the intelligence quotient, the academic achievement of the parents, the thinking test Tribal coordination).
Two tools were required to achieve the research objectives: the first, an achievement test for female students; and the second, a coordinative thinking test. The two tests were characterized by validity and reliability .After preparing the teaching plans and the two tools, the experiment was implemented by the curriculum teacher in the school in the first semester of the academic year (2023-2024) on Sunday, corresponding to (10/15/2023 AD), and it continued for a full semester and ended on Tuesday, corresponding to (1/8/2024 AD). The post-coordination thinking test was applied on Thursday (1/4/2024 AD), and the achievement test was applied on Monday (1/8/2024 AD) to the two research groups.
1- The use of the pentagram strategy in teaching the Arabic language subject contributed to raising the level of academic achievement of fifth-grade female students in the subject of Arabic syntax, as they are in a renewable stage in the learning process, especially if this relates to the subject of the Arabic language, its teaching methods, and the diversity of methods. It also significantly contributed to the development of their coordinated thinking.
2-The directorates of education should direct male and female Arabic Language teachers to use the pentagram strategy as an alternative to traditional teaching methods that make students mere recipients of the information presented during the lesson, and to benefit from the results of the current research.
3-The effect of the pentagram strategy on the achievement of fifth-grade middle school female students in the Arabic language subject and the development of their reflective thinking.
