Abstract
At the beginning of his appointment, Nabu-bēl-shumāti played the role of Assyria’s loyal friend, but at the same time he was planning to join Shamash-shum-ukin, hoping to gain some spoils if the rebellion succeeded. The main reason behind his participation in the revolt was the persistent Chaldean ambition to make Babylonia independent from Assyria. When Nabu-bēl-shumāti fled to Elam, he took with him many prisoners from the Assyrian military garrisons stationed in the Sealand.
